The father of famous sibling musicians The 5 Browns was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison in Utah on Thursday on charges of sexually abusing his three daughters, according to AP. After being charged last month, 55-year-old Keith Scott Brown pleaded guilty to three felonies: sodomy on a child under 14 and two charges of sex abuse of a child.
His daughters -- who, with their two brothers, form the renowned classical piano quintet -- are now in their 20s and 30s, and say they were molested by their father throughout their childhood. The sisters -- Desirae, 32, Deondra, 30, and Melody, 26 -- decided to press charges when they learned of their father's intentions to manage other child musicians. While Brown's lawyer has described his client as "remorseful," the judge was unapologetic when it came time for sentencing.
"I do believe you are a pedophile. I do believe you are a danger to society," Judge David Mortensen said to Brown. "I think it's obvious a home should be a refuge and a safe place, and that a parent should be a protector." However, the judge informed Brown that he was issuing a lighter sentence than usual "through the consent of your victims." Brown's daughters agreed to a plea deal last month if their father would plead guilty; they appear to be less interested in revenge than in preventing him from harming others. The 5 Browns are currently doing a concert tour on the East Coast, which has allowed them to avoid the media circus in their home state. They were not present at the hearing, but their attorney seemed satisfied with the sentence. "This is what the victims wanted," the Deputy Utah County Attorney David Sturgill told The Salt Lake Tribune and other press at the courthouse. "I hope they're happy it finally came." Still, Sturgill is not sure that any sentence is truly adequate. "To say whether 10 years, 15, 20 years in jail or prison is enough for (what) he's done, I don't know," Sturgill said. "Whether it's good or bad, he has changed the course of their lives, and I don't know if there's any price he could possibly pay that would make up for that."Source: http://www.ivillage.com/5-browns-dad-gets-10-years-life-prison-sexually-abusing-daughters/1-a-336911
