It's just a drop in the bucket, but a lovely gesture nonetheless: Kate Middleton's parents will contribute a six-figure sum to help pay for their daughter's wedding to Prince William.
For Carole (pictured above, with Kate) and Michael Middleton, who own an online party supplies company called Party Pieces -- which made them millionaires -- “It is something they absolutely wanted to do, and William graciously accepted,” a source tells Vanity Fair. Traditionally the royal family alone pays the entire cost.
The wedding is expected to cost more than 10 million pounds (which calculates to about $16 million) according to the London newspaper The Telegraph, which also notes that the Middletons want their contribution to go towards a specific aspect of the wedding, such as the honeymoon, rather than making an "impersonal" contribution towards the overall cost.
The Middletons see their financial gift -- the exact amount has not been specified -- as one way to stay involved in their oldest daughter's big day, according to another source, who says, "Prince William and Catherine's intention right from the outset has been to make sure that the Middleton family are as tied into the arrangements as possible," adding, "They are a very close family and this was their way of offering to be part of the day."
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles will be picking up the bulk of the cost of the wedding, including the church service, music, flowers and receptions; British taxpayers will foot the bill for security, policing and street cleaning on the big day, which could run into tens of millions of dollars.
Kate and William are said to be very aware that many citizens are in precarious financial straits so don't want to be seen as spending money frivolously. However, they also realize that their nuptials must be a world-class event. "All parties involved, not least Prince William and Miss Middleton, want to ensure that a balance is struck between an enjoyable day and the current economic situation," Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Prince William’s private secretary and the man in charge of organizing the wedding, tells The Telegraph.
That's why every little bit helps.

The word "catfight" doesn't do justice to the warring women on this season's The Celebrity Apprentice (NBC, Sunday, 8 p.m. ET). "I was dodging knives and bullets!" said the just-fired Lisa Rinna, during Ryan Seacrest's radio show on Monday morning.
Though Rinna was the project manager during Sunday's challenge, her female teammates, led by Star Jones, banded together and "went after me," as Rinna put it. Meanwhile, the men's team worked relatively well together, with project manager Meat Loaf describing the whole group as "fantastic."
Before it even began airing, season 4 was already making headlines over a fight between Star Jones and NeNe Leakes. The altercation got so heated, it turned physical. Leakes later told Wendy Williams, "I wouldn't spit on Star if she was on fire."
Two episodes later, Rinna is describing an atmosphere of bullet dodging. What's the implied message here? Men know how to get the job done without emotional baggage. But women? Well, meow.
This is troubling because it's not the only place on reality TV where women are pitted against one another. Did you happen to catch the latest The Bachelor: Women Tell All special? Or, have you seen a single episode of any season of The Real Housewives franchise? The women involved are clearly cast with conflict in mind, and no doubt producers encourage them to ramp it up for the cameras.
Like most reality competitions, The Celebrity Apprentice mines conflict where it sees fit. This season, the drama appears to be among some queenly females hand-picked by casting agents, then prodded to fight.
In defense of the female gender, it must be pointed out that on this show, the contentious moments just as easily come out of the men's group. In the past, producers have chosen to go that way -- choosing off-kilter men and nudging them even closer to crazy. Let's remember, please, the volatile Dennis Rodman of season 2, raging against Clint Black because…oh, who knows?
The show wants conflict, and it will take it wherever it can get it. This season, the women happen to be supplying the mean. Let's hope the trend doesn't continue.

Trying to brush off her shaky recent past, Christina Aguilera was helping to boost interest in her new gig by attending NBC's press conference for "The Voice" in Los Angeles, California.
With the event taking place at the L.A. Center Studios on Tuesday (March 15), the "Burlesque" star brightened things up in a colorful red frock as she joined up with Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and host Carson Daly.
With Aguilera taking on the duties of a singing coach, she told press of the gig, ?There is no good and bad. This isn?t about tearing people down. I want to bring these people up. The Voice really does stand for what it says."
Christina added, ?You can judge people based on the way they look. I love that fact we get to sit here with our backs turned away from these people and completely use just one sense to hear these voices. I?m not looking for vocal acrobatics, who has biggest range high and low. I?m looking forward to getting moved."
