Jane Eyre Movie Review

Jane Eyre Movie Review

[SPOILER ALERT: DON’T READ IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE JANE EYRE AS AN UNSOILED FLOWER.] Director Cary Joji Fukunaga’s deliciously dark and stormy big-screen adaptation of Jane Eyre (in select theaters on March 11) serves up all the delights of Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel: deep melodrama, broken hearts and a teen-age heroine (Mia Wasikowska, pictured) who never accepts the misfortunes served her way. But in addition to the restrained tears, tight bodices and handsome lords, there are a few lessons in Jane’s story that any modern woman can benefit from:

1. Family not supportive enough? Form your own with friends (or newly discovered cousins).  In her youth at Gateshead, the orphaned Jane is chastised for expressing herself -- in her outspoken wit, bookish hobbies and anatomically accurate drawings. Who needs an aunt that banishes you or a long-lost uncle you have never heard of? Along her harrowing journey, Jane gathers deep friends and reliable allies by remaining true to her own self. From her boarding school friend Helen Burns (Freya Parks) to the three siblings that take her in when she is literally homeless, she resets her life’s course by the people she chooses to be close to.  “You are the family I have longed for,” she says to St. John Rivers (Jamie Bell).

2. Always demand equal respect -- in cash, please. Don’t be fooled into thinking that women’s problems are over now that corsets have been retired. True, we are no longer confined “to making puddings and knitting stockings,” but according to information released by the White House just this week, women still have a long way to go towards gender equality. Women in the U.S. earn only 75 cents to the dollar every man makes. In Jane Eyre, as single-minded as our young heroine is, there is only one thing that ultimately gives her complete independence: a nice chunk of change that lands in her lap via an out-of-the-blue inheritance.

3. Before committing to a love for life, peek inside all those locked closet doors. It’s easy to get cloudy vision when you’re faced with the affections of a hunky man like Mr. Rochester (hot German actor Michael Fassbender). But never forget that your new love has had an entire life before the two of you met, (and in the case of Rochester, an entire wife!). Chances are there is something in his past you need to know about. Ask the hard questions, follow your gut, and if something is nagging you (like, oh, late-night screams from the attic), don’t just ask where they are coming from, demand to be shown for yourself. For, as Jane learns, it’s only with the full truth that you can decide your destiny confidently.

Jane Erye opens in select theaters on March 11.

Anti-Gay Issues Lead Lady Gaga to Pull Out of Target Deal

Anti-Gay Issues Lead Lady Gaga to Pull Out of Target Deal

Lady Gaga may have expected more from Target.

The songstress had signed a deal with the discount retailer for it to release an exclusive edition of her second studio album, Born this Way, set to debut on May 23. But now the pop star has reportedly pulled out of the deal, according to E! Online.

Gaga was said to be off-put by Target's policies on political donations and their impact on issues important to gays and lesbians. "She and Target didn't see eye to eye on Target's policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community," a source told gay magazine The Advocate.

Target has been under fire by LGBT activists since the revelation that it had donated $150,000 in corporate funds to MN Forward, a political action committee that supported anti-gay candidate Tom Emmer in his unsuccessful 2010 bid for governor of Minnesota, according to the magazine.

Music magazine Billboard reports that Gaga initially had been uncomfortable with the proposed deal with Target, but she decided on some ground rules before going ahead with it. "Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they've made in the past," the magazine quotes her as saying. "Our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they've made supporting those groups."

E! Online says that Target, whose slogan is "Expect More. Pay Less," could not promise that it would never donate to a political candidate or group believed to be anti-gay.

Mel Gibson to Plead Guilty to Hitting Oksana

Mel Gibson to Plead Guilty to Hitting Oksana

Hey, remember Mel Gibson, the man whose hate-spewed rants we were all gasping over before Charlie Sheen hijacked the crazy train? Despite Gibson's relative lack of headlines, the bitter court battle between the actor and ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva rages on -- and on Wednesday, we learned that Gibson will plead guilty to charges of domestic abuse.

Gibson's decision is part of a plea deal that his lawyers reached to put a quick end to the court case -- well, at least this particular part of the court case. (Gibson is still pursuing extortion charges against Grigorieva, and we stopped keeping track of the custody situation with their 17-month-old daughter Lucia. But we digress.) On Friday, the actor will plead no contest to misdemeanor battery of Grigorieva, in exchange for getting out of a jail sentence. His lawyer appealed to the judge by saying that Gibson was innocent, but that Gibson was less interested in proving his innocence than avoiding a media circus.

"Mel's only priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter Lucia and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made," Gibson's lawyer said today in a statement. "It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the District Attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end."

Actually, Gibson already admitted to hitting Grigorieva earlier in the case, which has been going on since July. Gibson testified last year that he hit his ex-girlfriend "one time with an open hand" in an "attempt to bring her back to reality." (Note to all girlfriends and wives out there: If your partner thinks that hitting you is "reality," then you need to escape reality immediately.) Grigorieva alleged that there were multiple incidents of abuse, and presented the court with pictures of bruises on her face and her daughter's chin.

Gibson will not go to jail for assault, but will serve probation and probably be required to undergo counseling. Ironically, another celebrity copped a similar deal a few months ago, avoiding jail by pleading guilty to assaulting his wife. Yep, you guessed it -- it was Charlie Sheen.
